What Is a Quadrilateral?

A quadrilateral is a figure with four sides and four corners.

Different types of quadrilaterals

There are many different types of quadrilaterals. Some quadrilaterals have sides of equal lengths. Other quadrilaterals have sides of different lengths. Some quadrilaterals have all equal angles, and other quadrilaterals have differently sized angles. You will learn to compute the area and perimeter of squares, rectangles, parallelograms, rhombuses and trapezoids.

You find the perimeter of quadrilaterals by measuring the length of each side and adding them together.

Formula

Perimeter of a Quadrilateral

Perimeter = side1 + side2 + side3 + side4

Formula

Perimeter of a Quadrilateral

Perimeter = side1 + side2 + side3 + side4

Example 1

Find the perimeter of this quadrilateral:

An example of quadrilateral with side lengths 4, 5, 7 and 9

An example of quadrilateral with side lengths 4, 5, 7 and 9

You use the formula above and substitute the numbers:

P = side1 + side2 + side3 + side4 = 4cm + 5cm + 7cm + 9cm = 25cm

If you add all the angles in a quadrilateral, you will always get 360.

Rule

The sum of angles in a quadrilateral is always 360.
